Parque Central

I’ve reached Ecuador, my final new country of the tour. The riding became mountainous again, and I continued my usual practice of stopping to rest in town plazas. Six countries in, the pattern remains the same. In the center of the colonial town grid, you are sure to find a park with benches and shade. At all hours of the day, these spaces are so well used (especially by children). Take a walk with me through the comfortable and lively urban life of Catacocha:

In the blocks surrounding, you can do business, find transportation, and complete other tasks. Imagine the classic Main Street U.S.A. wrapped around a park. And of course, you still find town squares in the U.S. (there are two from early on my tour in the photo gallery!). But it’s rare to see a main street with as much activity as a South American plaza.
