Cañon del Pato

After Huaraz, the Río Santa flows down a narrow canyon to the ocean. The road that follows the river winds through over 30 tunnels and sits on ledges cut into the vertical walls. This part of the ride was almost a total surprise for me. It was just a road on the map that made sense to take. But I heard mentions from other bike travelers in the area about some tunnels. Just the night before I departed, I realized I had lucked into a trip through a famous place for travelers in Perú.

After the fun of the Cañon del Pato, it was back to the desert coast, which I will follow most of the way to Ecuador.
