There’s Always Another Hill in Perú

On paper, the next leg of my journey was downhill. I needed to travel from the Altiplano to the Pacific Ocean. But Perú is a very mountainous country, and about four big ridges stood in the way. Over three weeks, it felt like more uphill than down! A fellow bike traveler told me, “there’s always another hill in Perú.”

Each climb was a mess of switchbacks on the map. They looked like this.

This video has three clips of going down them.

The river valleys and mountaintops were quite scenic, but very cold at night. The sun was setting quite early each day due to the time zone.

In the final week, I descended into the coastal desert. At a couple viewing platforms, I could see the famous Nazca and Palpa lines. Then, I started up the foggy coast, which has surprisingly great weather for bike touring near the equator.
