Carretera Austral Part 2

After Coyhaique, the Carretera Austral has less pavement and fewer towns and stores. But the landscapes open up, with views of the Patagonian ice fields, and greenish blue lakes and rivers.

My bicycle took a beating on the ribbed gravel roads. I had to stop for three days to repair my front wheel, but the town I was in had a bike shop, and we arranged for a part to be brought on the bus.

During my break in Río Tranquilo, I was able to take a kayak tour of the famous marble caves.
